QOTW: Duh!

And the Question of the Week is… Have you ever taken a sick day when you weren’t really sick?

I think the answer to this should be “duh!” Or “do hangovers count as sick?”

Yes. It was my second day on the job, and I forgot how to get there. So, rather than look dumb, and call my boss for directions, I returned home and called in sick.

Sunday Stealing: The Halloween Meme

Here's the Sunday Stealing question of the week:

1. What is your favorite written work of horror fiction? Mother Goose

2. What is your favorite work of science fiction/fantasy? Lord of the Rings

3. Who is your favorite monster? Grover.

4. What is your favorite Horror movie? Dawn of the Dead

5. What horror movie gives you the most chills? Hostel

6. What character from any horror film would you most like to play? The character that survives all the way to the end of the movie

7. Freddy or Jason? Jason. Freddie is too goofy, especially in that preppy striped sweater

8. What is your favorite Halloween treat? Gum. It's the most practical. It can freshen breath and clean teeth after a meal.

9. Ghosts or goblins? I don't even know what a goblin is.

10. Friendly-faced jack-o'-lantern or scary one? A friendly-face jack-o-lantern defeats the whole purpose, doesn't it? I mean, what if the Headless Horseman had carved a happy smile on his pumpkin? The people of Sleepy Hollow would have laughed him right out of town. Bratty neighborhood kids would have TP'd his horse, and smashed his pumpkin head on the street just for kicks. Come on, people!

11. What is your scariest encounter with the paranormal? I think my eighth grade English teacher was an alien. And, she was pretty scary.

12. Do you believe in ghosts? Why or why not? No, because my only references are Hollywood movies, which are fake, and crazy people who also see things like unicorns having tea and cookies, and pink polka-dotted elephants on the lawn outside.

13. Would you rather be a zombie, alien, or psycho? an alien. They're the smartest of the three. Although, zombies can take a lot of abuse and still keep coming

14. Favorite Halloween costume? a marshmellow

15. Best thing about Halloween? Scaring little kids

16. Person in your family who most likes Halloween (not counting yourself)? My cousin is a witch (political correction: wiccan)

17. Are you superstitious? I don't know. I'll ask my 8-ball. The little 6-sided polygon floating inside has all the answers

18. Share an unusual Halloween story. We used to have our parents drop us off in the wealthy neighborhoods to trick-or-treat, because the people in the mansions always gave out the best stuff!

19. What did you do for Halloween as a kid? Went to my grandma's

20. What's the best Halloween party that you've attended? My grandma had some pretty wild parties

O is for...

It's my first time to join ABC Wednesday and this week's theme is O:

Ostrich. Some fun facts about the Ostrich:
1.) a female can lay 50 eggs or more per year;
2.) Ostrich chicks grow 1 foot per month;
3.) Ostrich feathers are used for feather dusters;
4.) An Ostrich's eyes are larger than its brain;
5.) They can run up to 45 mph and maintain that speed for 30 minutes;
6.) They have two sets of eyelids. One set is opaque, and used to see during sandstorms - kind of like protective goggles;
7.) an Ostrich's knees bend forward;
8.) A fully grown Ostrich has one of the most advanced immune systems known to mankind;
9.) Ostriches do not bury their head in the sand, contrary to what people believe;
10.) They are farmed in any climate - from Alaskan to Central African;
11.) Ostriches are one of the most environmentally friendly animals to farm

I did not know that!

Fun Activities for Dads and Kids

As a father, I consider it extremely important to spend time with my son, Josh, as much as I can. Often, I take my son to the various parks near our home to play on the slides, the swings, merry-go-rounds, or just walk around exploring. Or, sometimes we watch short videos together, or sit at his small table in his room coloring, or playing with trucks on his rug. These activities keep us busy, and keep us spending quality time, but, I started thinking the other day, and wondered, what are some other great ideas for fun things fathers and sons can do together?
Children Josh’s age (2 to 3 years) love to explore, they love to learn, and just be active. Some of the ideas I came up with were:
1.) Not just reading books together, but acting them out
For example, my son loves to read the story, Mr. Brown Can Moo Can You, by Dr. Seuss. I could be Mr. Brown, and my son could make the sounds. I could put on my brown sport coat and brown shoes, and my son could act out the thunder, lightning and rain with motions.
2.) Make Saturday morning breakfast together
Especially because mommy likes to sleep in! I’m sure my son could begin to learn how to measure, stir and mix. For example, we could make something fun, like chocolate chip pancakes, shaped like animals, with syrup. A great way to make pancakes into different shapes is to use cookie cutters. You can buy cookie cutters in many different shapes, from zoo animals to toys to pirate ships.
3.) Pack and take a day trip
There are plenty of inexpensive places near your home you may not even know about that you might never have thought to take your kids. For example, I used to think going to a waterpark meant driving across the state to the major place everyone’s heard of. But I found out I was wrong. There is an indoor waterpark, that doesn’t cost too much, and doesn’t require two or three days in a hotel not even 30 minutes from our home, in a little town no one’s even heard of. But it’s there, and going was a blast! Another example of a day trip could be the museum, or an art fair. Pack a lunch!
4.) If you have older kids, you can have a treasure hunt outside around the house, or make crafts or model airplanes or ships, create your own crossword puzzles or Sudoku puzzles. (It actually isn’t that difficult to create those Sudoku puzzles. I tried it, it’s actually fun.)
Well, I those are some of my ideas, now I’d like to read yours. Please leave a comment listing your unique ideas for fun activities fathers can do with their kids. Thanks!
Spending quality time with your kids, and making sure to do a large variety of unique and imaginative activities helps them grow and learn, expand their vocabulary, and be all-around healthier and happier. And, perhaps most importantly, it helps parents stay close to their kids and build a great relationship that will continue throughout a lifetime.
